Goodmans' summer program is not merely an abridged version of articling. We know that the summer goes by quickly and that students want to get the most out of it so we are very flexible in tailoring the summer to individual students needs. We assign mentors to work directly with each student and we work hard to ensure that students see first-hand what being a lawyer at Goodmans is like. Summer students will observe how a lawyer handles all aspects of their cases or transactions, attend client meetings and court proceedings, contribute ideas, work on substantive matters and actively participate in the life of the firm. We also know that the key to a happy, successful and gratifying work life is a supportive, friendly environment and that great, long lasting relationships develop when people have a chance to get acquainted outside of the office. So we organize a wide variety of social activities that enable our students to develop strong bonds as a group, and to get to know lawyers at the firm. At the end of the summer, students come away from Goodmans with a solid understanding of the practical application of law and a sense of what it is like to practice law at Goodmans. The foregoing is entirely translatable to a virtual setting, which is something our 2020 summer students and 2020/2021 articling students (among others) can attest to.
